Deployment - Nederlands

During Operation Market Garden, in September 1944, Phantom was with the parachute troops at Arnhem; a Phantom patrol provided communication and liaison between forward units and HQ. This included the famous, desperate, message from General Urquhart that “... unless physical contact is made with us early 25 Sept...Consider it unlikely we can hold out long enough ....” Two Phantom officers were subsequently awarded the Military Cross for maintaining these important lines of communications during the operation. Checkpoints were told if they saw any paras wearing black berets they weren't to be stopped and checked they were to be let through with all urgency.

Phantom units also operated with XXX Corps and with General Browning whose HQ was next to 82nd Airborne HQ in Groesbeek.
